Adjust the template to the opening, tighten the connections, and move the assembled tool onto your tread blank. Trace along the template edges to mark your cutting references. This gives you a physical pattern to work from and reduces the need to recreate the end angles from separate measurements.

Slotted bars allow the assembly to slide to the required span, while the end templates rotate to follow the sides of the opening. Star-shaped knobs let you loosen and tighten the connections by hand. The marked template edges provide an additional reference as you position the tool.

Bolts, washers, and threaded knobs connect the bars and end templates. The red aluminum sliders and black templates are each shown with a thickness of 0.16 inch. Tighten every connection after adjustment, then check that the layout has stayed in position before tracing or cutting.
